Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL)

Department of TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages), previously known as Department of TCAFL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) was founded in 1985. It is one of the long-standing composite degree programs in Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), which is also one of the four earliest ones in China to offer this undergraduate major.

TCSOL focuses on English-Chinese bilingual education, intercultural communication, and teaching methods and theories of TCSOL. The students fostered have a solid foundation in English and Chinese language, a comprehensive understanding of Chinese and foreign literature and cultural exchanges and a grasp of the basic theories and methods of TCSOL. Besides, they also possess a broad international perspective, high innovation consciousness and ability, good cross-cultural communication ability as well as communication and cooperation skills.

TCSOL mainly trains senior personnel in foreign exchange, specialists in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and high-level talents who can be engaged in management work in foreign-related departments. Over the past 30 years, alumni have made remarkable achievements in these fields and won high social reputation.

In recent years, TCSOL has been intensifying its curriculum construction and teaching reform by relying on advantages of School of Education, breaking down the barriers of different departments, selecting the most distinctive and high-quality courses of various majors, thus forming the interdisciplinary elective course module within the School.

It has also established a multi-level, all-round and full-covered teaching practice model, providing each undergraduate with 2-3 internship opportunities at home and abroad during their studies. TCSOL has signed cooperation agreements with many well-known schools at home and abroad, which provides an internationalized and high-quality practice platform for students who are willing to engage in education.


Educational Technology (English)

        Founded in 1986, the B.S. program in Educational Techology (English) is a comprehensive international program. Students study both English and theories and skills in educational communication and corporate training. Students are awarded a bachelor of science degree at the end of their studies.

        In 1998, the department set up a master's degree program, which has four research directions: performance technology and enterprise training, teaching design and teaching development, foreign language teaching technology and new media education application.

Objectives:

        Cultivate international compound talents with good ideological and moral qualities, solid knowledge of educational technology, strong performance analysis, curriculum development, and teaching (training) design, educational resource development and management, and basic skills of English language.

 Requirements:

        The program requires students to master the basic knowledge and skills of enterprise performance analysis and teaching (training) system design. Students should have the basic ability of to develop educational resources and making multimedia works. Students should also master the basic methods of information retrieval and data query, and have the ability to further study according to the needs of educational technology work. Students are required to cultivate the ability to communicate, cooperate and innovate in a cross-cultural environment.

 Curriculum:

        Core courses include Instructional Systems Design, Online Learning, Online Course Development, Performance Analysis, Design and Development of Enterprise Training, Instructional Media and Technology, Research Methods of Educational Technology, Educational TV Program Planning and Production, Evaluation and Change Management in Training, Introduction to Educational Communication, Intercultural Communication, Instructional Message Design, etc. The courses use original English teaching materials and bilingual teaching method.

Skills courses include Design and Development of MOOCs, Photography, Design and Production of Digital Video,etc. The English main course runs through the first, second and third grades, and English major ii is set up from the second grade. Students take TEM-4 and TEM-8.

Characteristics:

        The program set up MOOC Research and Development Center, International Comparison Research Center for Information Technology in Education and Global Education Research Center”. Through tight cooperation with the Ministry of Education, human resources developed at home and abroad, or consulting enterprise (sign up practice base, etc.), the program creates opportunities for students in independently conducting innovative entrepreneurial activity, so that the students can experience market-based practical training after school to get more experience and opportunity of employment.

Employment:


Graduates have a wide range and high rate of employment. In addition to studying abroad, students mainly work in the government departments, universities, well-known media, financial industry, network technology companies, human resources institutions, digital education institutions, MOOC development, film and television production, publicity and exhibition companies. With the development of the program, a large number of well-known and excellent alumni emerged.



English Language Teaching (ELT)

The ELT program is characterized by the integration of English language learning and educational studies. It emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching and research. By taking courses in English language and literature, educational theories and practice, students are expected to achieve advanced level of English proficiency, lay solid foundation in liberal arts, and master various theories and skills regarding educational practice. Our graduates are excellent candidates for professions in the field of education and culture.

The ELT program boasts of a stellar group of faculty members, whose dedicated attitude and great expertise guarantees high quality learning experience for students. Such programs as English Corner, Tutorial System, English Speech Contest, Seminars, and Practicum, provide great learning opportunities for students.

The English language core curriculum includes: Integrated English, Advanced English, English Reading, English Linguistics, Phonetics, English Grammar, History of English and American Literature and Translation. The educational core curriculum includes: Study of Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Research Methods, Curriculum and Instruction, Selected Classics in Education, and Second Language Acquisition. Our program has signed MOU with a dozen primary and middle schools in Shanghai to provide practicum opportunity for students. Our graduates have won wide acclaim from the society for their outstanding performance.

Business English

Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2009, the BA program in Business English at Shanghai International Studies University aims at training qualified people with excellent English language skills and all-round ability in the fields of business and commerce. Students in the program are required to acquire not only solid intercultural communication skills, but also the necessary expertise in international business and the humanities. Students can satisfy the needs of government agencies, international organizations, multinational corporations, and other enterprises, and communicate effectively in business activities.

Students in the program are expected to be qualified, morally, intellectually, and physically. They should have moral fiber, mental and physical health, professional ethics, innovative awareness, team work spirit, and the ability to work under pressure. Meanwhile, they are supposed to be possessed of social responsibility, the awareness of their identity as world citizens, international business elites and cultural ambassadors. They are expected to absorb the essence of foreign cultures and to promote excellent traditional Chinese culture.

Students in this program are required to acquire knowledge of the English language, business, and culture. In particular, they should have a thorough grounding in the pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar of the English language. Linguistic competence in business English is also a must, as with proficiency in a second foreign language. As regards business expertise, students are supposed to be versed in economics, management and international trade. They should also be conversant with the practice, laws and regulations concerning international finance, trade, marketing and management. Meanwhile, students are expected to have an intimate knowledge of the history, geography, politics and literature of English-speaking countries, and to be keenly aware of the differences between the Chinese and foreign cultures, and of business etiquette. 

The core curriculum is composed of four course clusters, namely, knowledge and skills of the English language, knowledge and skills of business, intercultural communication skills, and humanities knowledge. The courses offered include Elementary Business English, Business English Listening and Speaking, Advanced Business English, Business English Writing, Business English Translation, Intercultural Business Communication, International Trade, Marketing, Intercultural Business Negotiation, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, etc.

In recent years, the Department of Business English has been stepping up its effort at curriculum development and teaching reform by exploiting the competitive edge in interdisciplinary studies, breaking down the barriers between Departments, selecting the most distinctive and high-quality courses of the other academic programs, and forging the interdisciplinary elective course module within the School.
